Road Safety message for Easter holiday season 2018

Global perspective on road safety

In terms of Global status report on road safety 2015, total number of road traffic deaths has plateaued at 1.25 million per year, with the highest road traffic fatality rates in low-income countries. While there has been progress towards improving road safety legislation and in making vehicles safer, the report shows that the pace of change is too slow. Urgent action is needed to achieve the ambitious target for road safety reflected in the newly adopted 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development: halving the global number of deaths and injuries from road traffic crashes by 2020. Most of the developing countries like South Africa have aligned their laws to international standard of best practice in dealing with risk factors on our roads.

Ngizoba Safe Routes to School Programme in eThekwini

Over seven thousand children in Durban, eThekwini are benefitting from the Safe Routes to School Programme which has been implemented by the eThekwini Municipality. The research project which has been piloted at eight schools by the Road Safety Branch of the Transport Authority since January 2016, is funded by the Janssen Pharmaceutical Companies of Johnson & Johnson and co-ordinated by the Global Road Safety Partnership South Africa.

Global Road Safety Leadership Course 2018

The Global Road Safety Partnership, in partnership with the Johns Hopkins International Injury Research Unit (JH-IIRU), hosted the second Regional Global Road Safety Leadership Course in Nairobi, Kenya on the March 4 – 16, 2018. The course is offered twice each year, and is made possible by the generous support of Bloomberg Philanthropies, as part of the Bloomberg Philanthropies Initiative for Global Road Safety (BIGRS).

The two-week training program aims to build leadership capacity to understand, design, advocate for, and implement effective road safety programs and policies among people who are active in road safety activities from low- and middle-income countries. Participants, who are nominated by key partner organisations within the BIGRS, are drawn from a wide field of expertise including enforcement, policy, urban design, infrastructure, law, and journalism. GRSP ZA General Manager, Lucky Molaudzi was privlaged to attend the course in Kenya on behalf of GRSP South Africa. The course covered topics drawn from the Decade of Action on Road Safety's five pillars of action, which were delivered by experts from GRSP, JH-IIRU, WHO and others.

 

Festive Season Fatal Crashes & Fatalities Statistics 2017

Transport Minister Joe Maswanganyi released the preliminary festive season road safety report on Monday, the 22 January 2018.

Maswanganyi said preliminary reports show that fatalities for the period starting 1 December 2017 to 9 January 2018 were 1 527 people, compared to 1 714 fatalities reported in the same period the previous year.

He reported that all the efforts put in to promoting safe road usage have given an improved picture during this festive season holiday.
